Root canal treatment has a reputation for being painful, but modern techniques have changed that completely — it actually relieves pain rather than causing it.
When Is a Root Canal Needed?
When the soft inner pulp of a tooth becomes infected or inflamed, usually from deep decay or a crack, a root canal is often the best way to save the tooth.
What Happens During Treatment
After numbing the tooth, we remove the infected pulp, clean and disinfect the inside of the root canal, then seal it and usually place a crown to protect the tooth going forward.
Is It Painful?
With modern anesthesia, most patients feel no more discomfort than they would getting a routine filling. Any pain you were feeling from the infection is typically resolved by the procedure.
Recovery
Most people return to normal activities the next day, with only mild sensitivity for a few days as the area settles.
